What does the Andromeda Galaxy look like through a long-exposure camera? This before-and-after image reveals both the beauty of the Milky Way’s closest major galactic neighbor and the challenges of photographing it through Earth’s busy skies.
Captured from a garden observatory in Portugal in 2019, the photograph combines 223 exposures lasting five minutes each—more than 18 hours of imaging. The original stack includes airplane and satellite trails, streaks caused by cosmic rays, and defective camera pixels that interfere with the view.
The finished image uses Astro Pixel Processor, DeepSkyStacker, and PixInsight to greatly reduce these unwanted artifacts. This processing helps reveal Andromeda’s structure by removing distractions introduced by our skies and the camera, giving us a clearer view of the distant galaxy.
Building From Example
We’re using the Athena V2 Iteration V18 from Sketchfab as the starting point for exploring the design and control of an actively guided rocket. This detailed model helps us understand the fundamentals of rocket framing, control systems, and coding needed for stabilization and flight.
