What’s happening at the end of that street? The striking columns of light shown here are not auroras, but a fascinating atmospheric phenomenon known as light pillars. Unlike auroras, which occur high in Earth’s atmosphere, light pillars form much closer to the ground when light reflects off countless flat, drifting ice crystals suspended in the air.
Most people are familiar with sun pillars, which appear as vertical shafts of light extending above or below the Sun. These occur when sunlight reflects from flat ice crystals high in the atmosphere. Typically, the crystals evaporate before reaching the surface. During extremely cold weather, however, similar crystals can form near the ground in what is known as crystal fog.
When this happens, artificial light sources such as streetlights, buildings, or vehicle headlights can reflect off the crystals, creating brilliant columns of light that seem to rise into the sky. The image shown here captures numerous light pillars illuminating the night, alongside the recognizable constellation Orion. The photograph was taken in Mohe, the northernmost city in China, where frigid winter temperatures provide ideal conditions for this spectacular display.

Building From Example
We’re using the Athena V2 Iteration V18 from Sketchfab as the starting point for exploring the design and control of an actively guided rocket. This detailed model helps us understand the fundamentals of rocket framing, control systems, and coding needed for stabilization and flight.
